Sometimes restoring a house means undoing work that has been done before. There might be a lot of that here, but I think this takes the biscuit!
Two bathrooms in the house and no one wanted to use either of them! The main, family bathroom was immediately at the top of the stairs, offering little privacy and had the toilet in the narrowest gap in the corner.
The ensuite to the second bedroom was a dark, windowless room that smelt incredibly damp and had lets be honest, the carpet in both rooms wasn’t winning any favours!
This was one of the first areas of the house that we demo’ed (we just couldn’t wait!). Which does mean we’ve been dealing with a portaloo on hire for about 18 months now – oh the glamour!
But really, we just couldn’t wait to open up that central wall and put the room back to where it should have been. Originally this would have been one space, as part of the two upstairs rooms in the cottage. The other part of what is now one house was previously used to house animals (we spoke to someone who lived here and can remember there being donkeys in our living room!).
There were also some pretty major structural issues that we were expecting to find lurking in this room (spoiler alert – they were there, plus more).
But when planning how to put it all back together, we realised that this room is not only immediately at the top of the stairs, but was our fifth bedroom that really, we just don’t need. But with two young children, we could definitely benefit from more dedicated family space.
So now… introducing what will be our family room / TV room / snug! A cosy space where we can watch a movie, eat popcorn or play boardgames.
I’ll share a moodboard as we move forwards but this is going to be gooood! It’s one to get stuck into and I think its going to be a favourite…
